What is the YC Request for Startups?

The YC Request for Startups (RFS) is Y Combinator's public list of areas where partners actively want to fund new companies. It's published on the official YC site as short paragraphs — usually a sentence on the problem, a sentence on why now, and a sentence on the kind of team they want to back.

The first Request for Startups was published by Paul Graham in 2008. Since then YC has updated the list roughly every 12–18 months. The 2026 Request for Startups is the longest YC has ever published: 15 categories, heavy on AI-native services, vertical agents, energy abundance, industrial space, and synthetic biology.

You do not have to build something on the RFS to be funded — every batch funds companies outside the list. But matching one of the 15 categories is the clearest possible signal to partners that what you're building is something they've already pre-committed to wanting. That's what this playbook turns into a buildable plan.
