FAQ

Common questions

What is Y Combinator and how does it work?
Y Combinator (YC) is the world's most influential startup accelerator, founded in 2005 by Paul Graham, Jessica Livingston, Robert Morris and Trevor Blackwell. Twice a year YC invests a standard amount ($500K on the YC deal) into around 200 startups, runs a 3-month program in the Bay Area, and ends with Demo Day. Alumni include Airbnb, Stripe, DoorDash, Coinbase, Instacart, Reddit, Dropbox and Twitch. We help aspiring founders learn from everything YC has published — for free.
What is YC RFS (Requests for Startups)?
Each batch, YC publishes a Request for Startups — a list of categories the partners are most excited to fund. They reflect where YC sees the strongest timing, the biggest markets, and the clearest gaps. The 2026 RFS covers 15 categories spanning AI, defense, space, healthcare and enterprise software. We turn each one into a structured page in our database — problem, customer, wedge, MVP path — with every YC source linked.
How do I apply to Y Combinator?
YC accepts applications year-round for two batches (Winter and Summer). The written application has ~15 questions about your team, idea, market and progress. Strong applications are specific, honest and show velocity. Our free Application Guide walks through every question, what YC partners are listening for, and side-by-side strong vs weak example answers — built from public YC partner talks and accepted application teardowns.
How do I pick the right startup idea for me?
The strongest founder-idea fit usually sits at the intersection of: a problem you understand deeply (often from personal experience), a market with real timing tailwinds in 2026, and your specific technical or domain expertise. Our database includes an idea scoring guide so you can evaluate each YC RFS category against your background, risk tolerance and skillset.
What's inside the YC Insights database?
43 databases covering every angle of the YC ecosystem — pivots, graveyards, first-1000-customer stories, batch packs (W24, S24, W25), vertical packs (AI, fintech, SaaS, consumer, healthtech, edtech, India), founder origin files, deep reports, master playbooks, and annual State-of-YC reports. Each database has its own page, its own sources, and its own FAQ.
What free resources do you offer for founders?
Everything on YC Insights is free to read on the web. We also publish free PDFs (no email required): an application cheatsheet, interview prep notes, the Default Alive calculator, a user interview script, and a 50-quote pack from Paul Graham. Plus deep guides on the YC application, the interview, the 15 RFS ideas, key essays and the YC mental models.
How is this different from reading the YC site directly?
The YC website is the source of truth — we always link back to it. What we add is structure: 20 years of essays, batch pages, founder interviews and S-1 filings organised into searchable, downloadable playbooks. Instead of reading 500+ pages to extract one insight, you get the synthesised version with the original source one click away.
Is YC Insights affiliated with Y Combinator?
No — YC Insights is an independent resource. Everything we publish is built from publicly available Y Combinator material: essays, partner talks, batch pages, founder interviews and public S-1 filings. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Y Combinator. Sources are linked on every page.
Do I need technical skills to use the playbooks?
No. The playbooks are designed for both technical and non-technical founders. Each idea includes a recommended technical stack, but the core value is in the business strategy: customer identification, pricing, go-to-market and execution planning. Many categories can be started by non-technical founders partnering with a technical co-founder or using modern AI coding tools.
