Who Owns Y Combinator?

Short answer

Y Combinator is a privately-held LLC owned by its founding partners (Paul Graham, Jessica Livingston, Robert Morris, Trevor Blackwell) and senior partners who joined later. It's not publicly traded. YC raises capital from outside Limited Partners (LPs) to fund the batches via the YC Continuity fund and other vehicles, but the management company itself remains partner-owned.

The ownership structure

YC operates as two distinct entities: (1) the YC management company — a private LLC owned by partners — and (2) the YC investment funds, which include outside LPs like Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, and university endowments. The management company collects fees and carry from the funds.

Garry Tan's role

Garry Tan became CEO in January 2023. He runs YC operationally but is not the majority owner — ownership remains distributed across the partnership.
