Did Y Combinator Invest in OpenAI?
Short answer
OpenAI was never a YC batch company. But the connection runs deep: Sam Altman was YC's President from 2014 to 2019, and YC Research — a YC-funded research arm — provided early support to the original OpenAI nonprofit in 2015. Altman left YC in 2019 to focus full-time on OpenAI as CEO.
The actual relationship
OpenAI was founded in December 2015 as a nonprofit by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and others. At the time, Sam Altman was running YC. YC Research — an internal YC initiative — supported OpenAI's early work, though it was not a traditional batch investment.
Sam Altman's overlap
Sam Altman was YC President 2014–2019. He ran YC and chaired OpenAI simultaneously for years. In March 2019, he stepped down from YC to become OpenAI CEO full-time. This is the closest thing to a 'YC investment' in OpenAI — leadership overlap and early YC Research support, not a Series A check.
Did YC profit from OpenAI?
YC did not take equity in OpenAI like a normal batch deal. Whatever upside YC has comes from YC Research's early commitments, which are not publicly disclosed.
