YC Interview Day Logistics — What to Expect

This page covers every logistical detail of YC interview day — what happens before the call, during setup, at the moment the interview starts, and in the hours after — so that when your interview begins, the only thing you are thinking about is your answers.

When YC invites you to interview, the email contains:

• Your interview date and time slot (in US Pacific Time)
• A link to schedule or confirm your slot
• A Google Meet link for the call
• Basic logistics instructions

Act on the email immediately. Confirm your slot within a few hours. The best slots — typically mid-morning PT, which is late evening IST for Indian founders — fill quickly. A mid-morning PT slot means the partner is fresh and has reviewed your application recently. Avoid the last slot of the day if possible.

Convert the time carefully. YC interviews run on Pacific Time. IST is 13.5 hours ahead. A 9:00 AM PT interview is 10:30 PM IST. A 2:00 PM PT interview is 3:30 AM IST the next day. Double-check the conversion and set multiple alarms.

48 Hours Before

• Confirm both cofounders have the Google Meet link saved and tested
• Test your camera, microphone, and internet on the exact device and location you will use for the interview
• If you will be on separate devices, run a 10-minute test call between your two setups — check audio echo, video quality, and who will share screen if asked to demo the product
• Confirm your metrics sheet is printed or open in a separate window — off-camera, not on the same screen as your video call
• Have your product open in a browser tab, logged into a real account with real data

24 Hours Before

• Do not prepare anything new. Your preparation window is closed.
• Run one final mock interview — not to improve, but to confirm your last state is strong
• Sleep at a normal hour. If your interview is at 3:30 AM IST, sleep early and set multiple alarms with a buffer

2 Hours Before

• Eat something. Founders who interview on an empty stomach at 3 AM make worse decisions under pressure.
• Do a 5-minute warmup conversation with your cofounder about the company — casual, not rehearsed. This gets your voice working and your mental frame synchronized.
• Open every tab you will need: the Google Meet link, your product (logged in), your metrics sheet, your application on ycombinator.com (for reference only)
• Close everything else on your screen
• Put your phone on silent except for calls — the acceptance call may come from a US number within hours of the interview

30 Minutes Before

• Log into the Google Meet link to confirm it works
• Check your camera framing — you should be centered, well-lit from the front, with a clean or neutral background
• Check your audio — speak at normal volume and confirm there is no echo or background noise
• If you are on separate devices with your cofounder, do a final audio check between your setups
• Keep a glass of water nearby

5 Minutes Before

• Do not review notes
• Do not rehearse answers
• Have one brief, natural conversation with your cofounder — anything about the company, spoken normally
• Join the call 2-3 minutes early so you are ready when partners join

Partners join the call promptly at the scheduled time. There is no small talk buffer. The first question arrives within 30-60 seconds of the call connecting. What happens in that first minute:

0:00 — Partners join. You see 2-3 faces appear on screen.

0:05-0:20 — A brief, warm greeting. "Hi, thanks for joining us." Not an invitation to pitch — a signal that the interview is starting.

0:30-1:00 — First question. Almost always: "Tell me what you're building" or "What does your company do?" Answer in one sentence. Stop. Wait for the follow-up.

The biggest first-minute mistake: launching into a 3-minute pitch because the greeting felt like an invitation. It is not. Answer the first question in one sentence and let the partners drive the conversation from there.

Technical issues in the first 60 seconds:

If your audio is not working when partners join, type in the chat immediately: "Audio issue on my end — one moment." Fix it fast and apologize briefly (one sentence) when your audio is live. Do not spend 3 minutes troubleshooting while partners wait silently — that is 30% of your interview time gone.

Lighting: Light should come from in front of you — a window or lamp facing you, not behind you. A backlit founder appears as a silhouette and looks unprepared. If you are interviewing at 3 AM IST, use a desk lamp positioned in front of your face.

Background: Plain wall, bookshelf, or a clean desk background. Virtual backgrounds on Google Meet are acceptable but occasionally glitch — test yours beforehand. Avoid distracting or cluttered backgrounds that pull partner attention away from your face.

Headphones vs. speakers: Use headphones with a microphone, not laptop speakers. Speakers create echo risk, particularly when two people in the same room are on the same call. If you and your cofounder are together, use one computer on speaker but in a quiet room — or have each person on headphones with a single shared microphone if your setup allows it.

Same room vs. separate locations: Same room is strongly preferred. It makes the team dynamic visible, eliminates the risk of audio interference between two devices, and allows natural handoffs between founders. If you must be in separate locations, test the dual-device setup specifically — two people on the same call from different devices can create audio feedback if one person's speaker bleeds into the other's microphone.

What to wear: Professional but not formal. A clean top is sufficient. Partners are evaluating your company, not your wardrobe. Avoid busy patterns that create moiré effect on video.

The interview ends abruptly at the 10-minute mark. Partners close the call. There is no debrief, no "we'll be in touch" timeline beyond what is already known (24 hours for decision).

Immediately after the call (within 2 hours):

• Write your interview debrief independently before discussing with your cofounder
• Note every question asked and rate your answer honestly (1-5)
• Note every moment of hesitation, long answer, or inconsistency
• Do this before the adrenaline fades and memory blurs

Keep your phone available.

The acceptance call comes from a US number, often within 3-6 hours of your interview. If you interviewed at 3 AM IST, the call may come by 9-10 AM IST. Keep your phone ringer on. If you miss the call, call back immediately.

Do not announce the outcome before you have it in writing.

Wait for confirmed written communication before telling your team, investors, or anyone else.
