YC Application Timeline — From Submission to Interview Day

This page walks through the complete timeline stage by stage, using YC's own stated patterns and consistent founder-reported timing, so you know exactly what to expect and when to act at each point.

Stage 1 — Application Window Opens

YC opens applications for each upcoming batch with several weeks to a few months of lead time before the on-time deadline. You can begin working on your application as soon as the window opens, and YC explicitly encourages early submission, since it gives partners more time to review your application and gives you more time to send meaningful updates before a final decision.

Stage 2 — The On-Time Deadline

Each batch has a specific on-time deadline, typically falling at 8:00 PM Pacific Time on the stated date. Applications submitted before this deadline are guaranteed a decision by a specific, stated date. This deadline is the single most important date in the entire process to plan around.

Stage 3 — Active Review Period

Review begins during the application window itself and continues, often more intensively, after the on-time deadline passes. Your application may be read multiple times by different reviewers during this period, particularly if it shows promise.

Stage 4 — Decision Communication Window

For on-time applicants, YC commits to a decision by a specific date, typically falling roughly four to five weeks after the on-time deadline. Within this window, you will receive either an interview invitation with a scheduling link, or a brief rejection email.

Stage 5 — Interview Scheduling

If invited to interview, you select an available time slot from the options provided. Interview slots are typically available across a multi-day window, and founders are encouraged to book as soon as they are ready, since slots can fill.

Stage 6 — The Interview Itself

YC interviews are exactly 10 minutes, conducted via video call with two or three partners. The interview is entirely conversational with no slides or screen-sharing unless specifically requested to view a live product demo.

Stage 7 — Post-Interview Decision

Decisions following the interview are communicated quickly, typically within 24 to 48 hours. Accepted founders receive a phone call; rejected founders receive an email.

A Realistic Total Timeline Example

Using a hypothetical batch with an on-time deadline of early May and a stated decision date in early June: an applicant who submits in mid-April has roughly three weeks before the deadline to refine their application, then experiences a three-to-five week wait before a decision, then if invited typically interviews within one to two weeks of receiving that invitation, and learns the final outcome within a day or two of the interview itself. Total elapsed time from a mid-April submission to a final outcome is typically eight to ten weeks.

Submit meaningfully before the deadline, not exactly at it. While YC reviews applications throughout the window and not strictly in submission order, submitting with some buffer before the deadline gives partners more time with your application and gives you the option to send a genuinely meaningful update if something changes before the final decision date. Submitting in the final hours removes this flexibility entirely.

Treat the gap between submission and a possible interview invitation as a parallel preparation window, not dead time. Many founders mistakenly wait until they receive an interview invitation to begin interview preparation, which compresses an already short scheduling-to-interview window even further. Begin building your interview readiness — knowing your numbers, refining your core answers, running early mock interviews — during the review period itself, so that if you are invited, your remaining preparation time can focus on refinement rather than starting from zero.

Understand that the timeline compresses significantly once you are invited. The most variable and time-pressured part of the entire process is the period between receiving an interview invitation and the interview itself, which can be as short as a few days depending on slot availability. Founders who have not done any preparation before this point are at a real disadvantage relative to founders who used the earlier waiting period productively.

Plan around the specific on-time deadline for your target batch, not a general sense of "sometime soon." YC's deadlines follow a predictable seasonal pattern — broadly, Winter batch deadlines fall in autumn, Spring batch deadlines fall in winter, Summer batch deadlines fall in spring, and Fall batch deadlines fall in summer — but the exact date shifts somewhat each cycle and should always be confirmed directly on YC's application page rather than assumed from a previous cycle's date.
