Lens 1, The Before State

Who Were They Before YC?

None of these three founders would have appeared on any startup radar. They were deep inside the academic bubble, not founders-in-waiting, not hackers dreaming of Silicon Valley. They were graduate students, buried in physics research, working in labs with names most people have never heard of.

Sam Wurzel had graduated from Brown University with a degree in physics and engineering, then enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he was working in an experimental plasma physics lab testing a fusion reactor confinement design. In his spare time, he wrenched bicycles at a bike shop. Not exactly the profile of a future startup founder.

Andres Morey had studied physics in college, that is where he and Sam became friends, and then moved into experimental cosmology research for his PhD. He spent his days thinking about the large-scale structure of the universe.

Harish Agarwal had an undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, a Master's from Cambridge University in Semiconductor Physics, and had just enrolled in a biophysics PhD program at UC Berkeley, studying nuclear transport in eukaryotic cells.

Three physicists. Three very different subfields. One thing in common: they all spent enormous amounts of time trying to find electronic components for their lab experiments, and the experience was, by every account, miserable.

The Personal Pain They Were Living

This was not an abstract problem. It was a daily frustration with a specific, tedious activity: finding parts.

When you're running experiments in a physics lab, you constantly need to source electronic components, capacitors, resistors, transistors, relays, oscilloscopes, sensors. The prices vary wildly across distributors. The specifications are scattered across PDFs and manufacturer catalogs. Finding a low-temperature capacitor, for example, meant opening ten browser tabs, cross-referencing specs manually, and calling distributors on the phone like it was 1987.

Andres grew so frustrated with this process during his research that he called Sam and suggested a direct solution: build a search engine specifically for electronic parts. Not a general search. Not Google with a better query. A purpose-built, structured database where engineers could search by specification, compare prices across distributors, and find exactly what they needed in one place.

They started writing code in mid-2006, in whatever spare time they had after full days in the lab. Sam described it simply: "After working in the lab all day, we would come home and write code on a Linux server that I bought at a yard sale for $50. We would often work until 3 or 4 in the morning."

A $50 yard-sale server. 3am coding sessions. A problem that nobody outside of hardware engineering would ever think to care about. This is where Octopart started.

Why They Almost Didn't Fit the "YC Founder" Stereotype

In 2007, YC was becoming associated with consumer web, social networks, and software products that millions of people might use. Octopart was a search engine for a narrow audience of electrical engineers and hardware developers. It was technical, niche, unsexy, and deeply unglamorous.

The three founders had no startup backgrounds. No prior exits. No angel investor network. They were academics who had taught themselves web development in stolen hours between lab sessions. On paper, nothing about them screamed "startup founders."

What they had instead was something more durable: a real problem, real users who felt that problem every day, and the discipline of scientists, people trained to build rigorous systems and test hypotheses carefully.

Key Insight for Aspiring Founders

The best startup ideas often come from problems that professionals experience daily but that outsiders don't even know exist. Andres wasn't hunting for a startup idea, he was trying to find a low-temperature capacitor. The frustration was so real and so repeated that building a solution felt less like entrepreneurship and more like survival. That quality of frustration, the kind that makes you stay up until 4am coding on a secondhand server, is a much better signal than market research.


Lens 2, The Idea Origin

How the Idea Was Actually Born

It started with a phone call. Andres was in his lab, frustrated once again by the state of parts search, and called Sam. The idea was straightforward: aggregate electronic parts data from all the major distributors, Allied Electronics, Digi-Key, Mouser, Newark, and make it searchable in one place with real comparison tools.

No pivot. No customer discovery interviews. No lean canvas. Just two physicists who had hit the same wall enough times to finally decide to build a door.

They started building in mid-2006 while still enrolled in their PhD programs. The first version was exactly what it sounds like: a database of parts, made searchable. Not elegant. Not funded. Not even a company yet, just a side project coded on a cheap Linux box in the hours between midnight and 4am.

After several months of building, they had something real enough to show. They decided to leave their PhD programs and apply to YC with what they had. Harish, who had been a friend of Andres through their shared physics background, joined the team during the YC process itself.

The First Ugly Version

The original product was raw but functionally honest. It did exactly one thing: let engineers search for electronic parts across multiple distributors and compare prices and availability in a single view. There were no beautiful interfaces or polished onboarding flows. The design reflected who built it, physicists who cared about data density and correct information, not visual polish.

What made it immediately useful was its structure. Most parts searches at the time relied on keyword matching against messy distributor websites. Octopart treated parts as structured data, searchable by actual specifications, filterable by parameters, comparable side by side. This was the physicists' sensibility applied to a web product: rigour and precision over aesthetics.

The Signal That It Was Working

Paul Graham, when asked about YC's approach to vertical search, used Octopart as his canonical example: "It's okay if people are doing a search that's not exactly the same thing as Google. So for example, Octopart does electronic parts search." That was the signal, a niche so specific, so clear, and so genuinely useful to its target audience that even YC's most skeptical questions had simple answers.

The early user base validated this immediately. Engineers who found Octopart through word of mouth in the hardware community didn't need to be persuaded. They had been suffering through the same problem for years. The product was self-evidently useful to anyone who had ever tried to source parts the old way.

The Pattern This Follows

Octopart fits a YC idea archetype that is underappreciated but consistently successful: "Google for X", a vertical search engine for a professional audience with high-intent, purchase-ready queries. The key insight is that general search engines serve general intent. Engineers searching for a 100μF electrolytic capacitor at the best price from a distributor who can ship in 48 hours have extremely specific intent. Serving that intent precisely, in a structured way, creates enormous value, even if the total addressable audience seems small by consumer standards.
