Meetyu never became a billion-dollar company. It shut down. But Russ d'Sa's journey from this failure is one of the most instructive in YC's history, because he went on to build LiveKit, the real-time audio/video infrastructure that powers OpenAI's ChatGPT Advanced Voice, Character.ai, and thousands of other AI apps. Who Was Russ Before YC?
Russ d'Sa grew up in Silicon Valley at exactly the right moment. Surrounded by startup culture, he absorbed the idea that technology wasn't something that happened to people, it was something people made. He studied at UC Davis and was already deep in the builder mindset before he ever applied to YC.
What set Russ apart was a consistent skill that ran through his entire career: he was unusually good at spotting platform shifts before they became obvious. He'd later describe himself as someone who was "pretty early to stuff", and he meant it literally. He turned down a job at 23andMe when they had five employees (it later became a landmark genomics company). He joined Twitter as the 30th engineer when most people had never heard of it. He saw things before the crowd did.
In 2006, the thing he saw was this: Apple had just started building webcams directly into their line of plastic white MacBooks. For the first time in computing history, millions of ordinary people had a camera pointed at their face every time they opened their laptop. Not a professional camera. Not a webcam they had to buy separately and plug in. Just... a camera. Built in. Always there.
Russ looked at that and thought: this changes everything about how people can connect online.
The Personal Pain He Was Living
The internet in 2006 was fundamentally text-based when it came to meeting new people. Dating sites showed static photos. Social networks were walls of text and profile pictures. The idea of actually seeing the person you were meeting, in real time, instantly, from your laptop, didn't exist in any accessible form.
Russ thought this was absurd. If you're trying to decide whether to meet someone, wouldn't you want to actually see them, hear their voice, get a feel for who they are? A webcam changed the equation entirely. It wasn't just a feature, it was a fundamentally different kind of connection.
Why He Almost Seemed Too Early
Russ applied to YC's fifth-ever batch, Summer 2007. YC had barely 50 companies in its history at that point. The accelerator was still a scrappy experiment run by Paul Graham out of Cambridge. There was no famous alumni network, no Demo Day hype, no brand cachet.
The idea of meeting strangers over webcam also had an obvious problem: it sounded uncomfortable to most people. The social norms around video-based interaction with strangers simply didn't exist yet. FaceTime wouldn't exist for another four years. Zoom wouldn't exist for another six. The behaviours Russ was betting on hadn't been invented yet.
Key Insight for Aspiring Founders
The most dangerous form of being wrong in startups is being right too early. The market doesn't care about your timing, it only cares about its own readiness. Know the difference between a bad idea and a premature idea.

Where the Idea Came From
The origin was hardware-driven, not problem-driven. In 2006, Apple put webcams in their laptops as a standard feature. Russ saw that and made a chain of inferences that most people didn't:
- If every MacBook now has a built-in webcam, soon every laptop will
- If every laptop has a camera, video calling becomes the default mode of digital interaction
- If video calling becomes default, there should be a place to meet new people over video, not just call people you already know
- Nobody has built that yet
This is what good founders do: they take a hardware or infrastructure change and reason forward to what social behaviours it enables. The webcam wasn't Russ's innovation, Apple's was. Russ's insight was that this hardware shift created a new social use case that no software had addressed.
The First Version
Meetyu launched as the first website designed explicitly for meeting new people via webcam. The core loop was simple: show up, see another person on video, decide if you wanted to connect. No long profiles. No text-based filtering. Just faces, real-time.
It was built on Adobe Flash, the only viable browser-based video technology of the era. This detail matters enormously, because Flash was the underlying constraint that would eventually kill the product's ability to scale and evolve.
The Signal That It Might Work
Russ got into YC. That was the signal. Paul Graham and the YC partners looked at what he was building and believed it enough to fund it in a batch of some of the earliest YC companies ever assembled.
The broader market signal came later, and it validated the idea even as Meetyu itself didn't survive. Chatroulette launched in 2009 and briefly exploded in popularity, proving exactly what Russ had hypothesised: people would absolutely meet strangers over webcam if you made it frictionless enough. The market was real. The timing was the problem.
The Pattern This Follows
Meetyu fits a specific YC idea archetype: platform-shift enabling play. The idea wasn't a new problem, humans have always wanted to meet other humans. It was a recognition that a hardware change (built-in webcams) had finally made a new solution possible. Many of the most important YC companies follow this pattern. The question isn't "what problem exists?", it's "what solution is now possible that wasn't possible 24 months ago?"

Getting Into YC's 5th Ever Batch
Meetyu was accepted into Summer 2007, the fifth batch YC had ever run. This context matters: YC in 2007 was not the institutional powerhouse it later became. It was still a relatively small, experimental program. Paul Graham was making funding decisions with a much smaller information set than later partners would have. The bar was different, not lower, but different. He was betting on founders and ideas that nobody had any comparable data on.
Russ's application argument was essentially: a new hardware capability (built-in webcams) creates a new social behaviour (video-based meeting), and no one has built the platform for that behaviour yet. It was a clean, simple, technology-enabled market opportunity framing.
