JustSpotted is the pivot name of a YC company called Scoopler. The YC-accepted company was Scoopler (S08), one of the very first real-time search engines ever built, predating Google Real-Time Search by over a year. This story covers the full arc: what got them into YC as Scoopler, why they pivoted to JustSpotted, and how they ended up acqui-hired by Google. It's one of the most instructive pivot stories in YC's early history.

Lens 1, The Before State

Who Were They Before YC?

Dilan Jayawardane grew up in Colombo, Sri Lanka, a country not historically associated with Silicon Valley pipelines. He was a prized scholar at Nalanda College, Colombo, then earned a scholarship to the University of Moratuwa, one of Sri Lanka's most competitive engineering institutions. From there, he won a scholarship to MIT, where he studied Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, one of the most competitive programmes on the planet.

After MIT, Dilan joined Oracle Corporation's RDBMS research team in Redwood Shores, California. On paper, it was a dream outcome: MIT graduate, Oracle engineer, stable American tech career. But something felt wrong. The work was large-scale, institutional, and slow. Dilan quit, moved to the United Kingdom, and started looking for a problem worth solving.

AJ Asver (Ajmal Asver) was a Sri Lankan software engineer who had moved through the Oxford graduate world and connected with Dilan in the UK. They came from different paths, Dilan from the MIT-Oracle world, AJ from the Oxford software engineering track, but shared a single obsession: the internet was generating information faster than any search engine could index it, and nobody was fixing that.

Benjamin Tauber later joined as the third co-founder, rounding out the technical team.

The Personal Pain They Were Living

In 2007, 2008, Twitter was beginning to take off. Breaking news was appearing on Twitter minutes, sometimes hours, before traditional news sites. Flickr was filling up with real-time event photos. Digg was surfacing trending links the moment they were shared. Yet Google, the dominant search engine, had a fundamental architectural flaw for this new world: it indexed the web on a crawl cycle, not in real time. If something happened right now, Google wouldn't surface it for hours or days.

Dilan and AJ kept running into the same frustration: if you searched for something happening live, a protest, a sports result, breaking news, you got yesterday's information. The web had become real-time. Search had not caught up.

Why They Almost Didn't Look Like "YC Founders"

The standard YC founder of 2008 was imagined as a Stanford or Harvard dropout building a consumer app from a dorm room in California. Dilan and AJ were international engineers, one from Sri Lanka, one from the Oxford world, building a search infrastructure product from the UK, before moving to Copenhagen, Denmark.

They were not in the Valley. They were not plugged into the tech social scene. They had no warm intros to Paul Graham and no prior YC connections. What they had was a technically credible idea, real-time search, at exactly the moment the world was about to need it desperately, and the MIT and Oracle credentials to back it up.

Key Insight for Aspiring Founders

Geography is not destiny. Dilan Jayawardane went from a scholarship student in Colombo to Oracle to MIT to YC to Google. At no point did he wait for permission to enter the next room. The path from Sri Lanka to a Google+ engineering role ran straight through a willingness to quit stable jobs and build things in countries where nobody expected him to be building.


Lens 2, The Idea Origin

How the Idea Was Actually Born

The idea for Scoopler came from a direct observation, not a brainstorming session. Dilan and AJ noticed that Twitter, Flickr, Digg, and Delicious were generating a stream of real-time signals, what people were sharing right now, what was trending this minute, what eyewitnesses were reporting as events unfolded, and that no search engine was capturing this stream in real time.

Traditional search worked like a library: index everything, then let people search the index. The new internet worked like a live broadcast: information was valuable for minutes or hours, then stale. Dilan framed it simply: "The idea behind Scoopler is to gather real-time information and show it in the search results. This means that everything is up-to-date, even if someone tweets or updates a Facebook status about the thing you're searching for, it will be available on the search results."

This was radical in 2008. Google did not offer real-time search. Twitter search was primitive. The gap was enormous and visible to anyone paying close attention to how information actually moved online.

The First Version

The first version of Scoopler was a search engine that indexed live updates from Twitter, Flickr, Digg, and Delicious, surfacing the most relevant, most recent content as it was being shared, not hours later. The interface was clean: a scrolling real-time results feed in the middle column, a "Popular" sidebar on the right, and a "Peek" button that let users preview linked content without leaving the page.

It was built before most people had heard of real-time search. It was built before Twitter was mainstream. It was built, in short, slightly ahead of where the world actually was, which turned out to be both its greatest strength and, eventually, its greatest vulnerability.

The Signal That It Was Working

When Scoopler launched publicly in May 2009, TechCrunch covered it immediately. The headline was "Search Goes Real-Time With Scoopler." Being named by TechCrunch as one of the top three real-time search engines in the world, alongside far better-resourced competitors, was the validation signal. Features in CNN, the Financial Times, The Telegraph, CNET, and Mashable followed.

For a two-person team built outside Silicon Valley, this level of press coverage in the first few months was extraordinary. The idea had legs.

The Pattern This Follows

Scoopler fits a specific YC archetype: the infrastructure idea that's one to two years early. The idea was right. The timing was slightly ahead of the mainstream. This pattern, right idea, slightly early, appears frequently in YC companies that end up acqui-hired rather than scaling to independent unicorns. Being early is not the same as being wrong. It's just a different kind of right.


Lens 3, The Application Anatomy

What Got Them Into YC (S08)

Scoopler applied to YC Summer 2008, the same batch that would later be called one of YC's most technically ambitious early cohorts. They got in as an international team, based outside the US, building search infrastructure at a time when "real-time search" was not yet a known category.

Their core pitch likely centred on three things:

  1. The gap was real and demonstrable. They could show, live, that searching for a breaking news topic on Google returned stale results while Scoopler returned tweets and posts from the last 60 seconds.
  2. The founders were technically exceptional. MIT EECS + Oracle RDBMS research is an extremely credible background for building a search engine. This wasn't two non-technical founders speculating about search, it was people who had worked in database infrastructure professionally.
  3. The timing was right. Twitter's growth in 2007, 2008 was creating the data source that made real-time search suddenly possible. Scoopler was built to index exactly what Twitter was generating.
